Public Life Rythm – Jönköping

How people spend time outside during a day in the city of Jönköping

I spend a full 10 hours for a day biking throughout the city of Jönköping in order to count the amount of people spending time outside in order to understand how the public life distribution changes over time.

As for private places (restaurant seatings in the map above) there are two clear humps in the data; one hump during lunch time, roughly 12:00-13:30, and one longer hump in the evening, roughly 18:00-23:00. These humps are to be expected, but they were more pronounced than i anticipated. Especially the big increase going from 16:30 to 18:30 showing the importance of the evening time-span to the local food service economy.

The same humps, although not at all less pronounced, can be seen for the people spending time on public places. Given that it’s also not uncommon for the distribution of public place sitters and private place sitters to spend time close to each other, one can spot some form of a dependency relationship between the two category of people. Only the parks of the city can manage to function as well occupied public places without the need of nearby commercial activities.

One can also quite easily suspect from the map above, that if you pair water with commercial activity and public amenities, it will naturally be a strong dominant public life attraction for a city.
