Podgorica city center Podgorica City Center The Morača river divides Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, in half. Underutilized green areas surround this river as well. As of 2020, the city of Podgorica has launched an architectural competition to make the Morača river a more lively place. I’d argue however, that the task is dependent on increasing the utilization of the green areas around the river, necessarily integrating public and commercial activities for the best groundwork of a good public life in the city. The proposal is simple. Create a quay-walk on top of one of the cliffs for good sun exposure, views of the meandering river and of the northern hill with its old fortification. A new landmark building replaces the old building between Millennium and Moscow bridge. The beach below the cliffs is made more accessible via new stairways and is extended via “beach walks” along the cliffs from north to south – ending in the characteristic Old Ribnica bridge and onwards to the historically significant Stara Varoš.
